Chapter 16 -- The Beginning of the End

Meeko secures a waiver to explore mineral rights on the reservation. He and Sunny celebrate in Washington knowing he has won another battle for the American Indian. Meeko will now open an office on the reservation to begin drafting mineral lease contracts.

But all too soon the magic fades. It is not long before he comes home late and falls across the bed in a drunken stupor. Their relationship grows even more strained, and Sunny decides it is time to return to the stage, making up her mind to courageously face whatever the future holds.

After the show finishes she drives across country to their house in Billings, Montana. After a difficult drive and an inspection of the new house, Sunny travels to the reservation. Meeko meets her at the terminal and she is shocked to see him drunk, swaying back and forth as he hangs onto the ticket counter for balance. Looking around she sees that several of his buddies are also drunk. Meeko's cousin, Ruby, informs her that the fighting, drinking and partying has been going on for a month. After picking up Meeko's things at the motel, Sunny finds a pair of women's underpants under the bed.

Meeko introduces her to three unsavory looking Indians, and Sunny is shocked to find out they are his business partners. After examining a stack of documents, she notes that Meeko has given these men stock in their company, as well as full rights to the use of the waiver, and the four of them have established an all-Indian drilling, seismic and dynamite company. Sunny is angry, reminding Meeko that it was her money and contacts that paid for the waiver. After speaking with her attorney she is informed that other oil companies cannot use the waiver until it is tested.

Later Sunny tries to use her credit cards, to find out that they are all charged to their limit. Following this discovery, she makes arrangements to limit all of Meeko's withdrawals on their joint account and transfers the bulk of the money back to her personal New York account. She calls Kate to book another road trip in hopes that a return to her career will feed her soul in a way Meeko no longer can. Meeko is angry when he finds out about the money and a fight ensues. Afterwards Sunny begs Meeko to get help, he refuses, and they part in anger again. In a conversation with Meeko later he admits that he has transferred and distributed seventy-five percent of the shares in the company to his partners, and changed the waiver to keep out all white owned companies, and dares Sunny to file for divorce as he continues to party.

Sunny still admits she can't live without Meeko as she cries, fights, and worries. She reaches a point where she places a loaded gun into her mouth. Fortunately Shung' intervenes before she pulls the trigger. She confronts Sunny about becoming prey instead of predator, and reminds her about Cheering Woman's teachings. She promises to help Sunny mend what is broken inside of her by force-feeding her the old knowledge.
