Chapter 4 -- Living With Sam

Sunny joins Sam on a moonshine run. Under the cover of night, we smell the newly brewed liquor as the process comes to completion. There is tragedy as Sunny's pet wolf falls into the vat and once again Sunny assists another soul to complete its life on earth. She vows to see Sam pay, the urge to kill him welling up inside her, but her grandmother's spirit comes to support her and she finds out that her wolf is already keeping Cheering Woman company.

Cheering Woman continues to teach Sunny to trust her lessons so that she will be part of Creator's bigger plan. Sunny returns to the liquor run and again feels the danger as she and Sam careen along the precipitous mountain roads. Unfortunately Sunny needs to trust Sam at this time. Her Grandmother's lesson is already putting Sunny to the test as Sam drives with utmost skill, bullets flying in all directions. Sunny and Sam abandon the truck as it bursts into flames. Sunny realizes that she doesn't want Sam to die. They both walk away having lived a lifetime in one short night.

We continue to learn with Sunny, as she and Sam hit the roadhouse. Here Sam is at his most charming. A skilled dice player, he uses his gambling skills in order to collect the money he knows that he deserves. Sam is many different characters at this time, the Dog Man, hustler, and game king with killer instincts. He drinks and gambles, pretends to lose, continues to play the game from all angles, and wins. He knows he is only a dumb Indian to his opponents, and uses this persona with the greatest skill, since winning is everything.

He isn't going to take the pot without a problem and as he moves to collect his winnings a fight breaks out. Sam is stabbed and Sunny again takes the lead, guiding Sam to a stream to hide from the police, then they make their way to the river. Sam is losing blood at a rapid rate as Sunny drags him towards the truck in what seems an eternity of time. Sunny faces another challenge as she takes over as driver coasting down the hill with Sam's instructions and following the road home to Auntie Rose.

Auntie Rose takes care of Sam's wound as well as their safety. As Sam heals, a bond begins to develop between him and Sunny. Sunny wants to return to the reservation for her womanhood ceremony and another Hanblecheyapi. This time Sunny warns Sam that she will run away if he doesn't agree to let her go. Sam drives Sunny to the reservation, where both are pleased to see Cheering Woman's work continuing amongst the people.

Shung' prepares Sunny for her womanhood ceremony, which teaches the grace and power of becoming a woman. Sam sees his daughter in a new light and is secretly pleased to see her carrying the pipe her grandmother had given to her. In this way Sam knows his daughter is now linked to all the Medicine women in their tribal past.
