Sunny and Auntie Rose make their way to New York City where Sunny begins her stage training. Here they meet Kate Cohen, a friend of Madame's who is to become an important resource for Sunny to launch her career. Sunny and Auntie Rose also learn to navigate around New York City. She demonstrates her dance steps at the Academy, and later on is thrilled to learn that she has been accepted on a scholarship, but this is only the first step in the making of a star as she begins her lessons in etiquette to turn her into lady. At first Sunny views these plans as criticism, but quickly learns to listen instead of talk. She works hard to adapt to her new life and surroundings and learns to travel the subway alone. Subtly Kate is also preparing Sunny to handle not only show business but also the nature of investments. Her life lessons also center on the world of show business. It is now time for Auntie Rose to return to the farm, but not before she and Sunny have time to laugh together about the stories that Auntie Rose will tell Sam over their New York experiences. She also wants Auntie Rose to reassure Sam that she is doing well. Afterwards in his conversations with his daughter, Sam grounds her in some good down home common sense. Life continues for Sunny with long hours of study and practice. Kate introduces Sunny to the world of auditions, though Sunny easily becomes discouraged after continuous rejections. Kate takes Sunny to a modeling audition. Imagining herself as a swan, Sunny completes her audition, and secures a part-time job as well as a newfound confidence. Sunny and Kate complete her audition by a meal at a New York hot spot that shows both of them how far Sunny has progressed in her social presentation. Later Kate introduces Sunny to the strange world of banks to take care of Sunny's financial returns. Later Sunny auditions for and secures the lead role in an Off-Broadway production that will travel as a roadshow. She grabs this opportunity to strive for perfection, immersing herself in the role. At dress rehearsal, the verdict is that the cast is inexperienced, but the four-month road tour will allow Sunny to mentally prepare herself for show business. Sunny is now twenty-one and loves her career. She is frugal and wisely invests her money in properties. Miss Sunny Beam loves weaving the spell of glamorous nights of illusion on her way to someday becoming a star. |
